Best time to visit:
Spring & Summer (September to February): Warm weather and longer days are perfect for exploring the parks and lakes, but it’s also the peak tourist season and Rotorua is quite the popular destination.
Autumn (March to May): Enjoy cooler temperatures and stunning autumn foliage. It’s also a lot less crowded compared to summer.
Winter (June to August): While colder, the winter months offer a quieter experience and the chance to enjoy the many hot springs in a cosy setting.
Getting there:
Rotorua has an airport that the majority of the main cities in New Zealand fly into. If you’re flying into Auckland we’d highly recommend road tripping to Rotorua as there are plenty of incredible spots to stop off at along the way. 1. Kuirau Park
A great spot to start your Rotorua adventure, Kuirau Park is a free public park that showcases geothermal activity in a more relaxed setting. Stroll through the park to see bubbling mud pools, steam vents, and the picturesque Lake Rotomahana. It’s a great introduction to Rotorua’s geothermal features.
2. Hells Gate
For a more intense geothermal experience, visit Hells Gate. This thermal park features a range of geothermal phenomena including the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere and a mud bath experience. Enjoy a therapeutic soak in the natural hot pools and explore the sculpted landscapes that make this place so unique.
3. Skyline Rotorua
Skyline Rotorua offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape from its gondola ride. Once at the top, you can enjoy the luge tracks, or explore the extensive mountain biking trails. Don’t miss the chance to dine at the Stratosfare Restaurant for a meal with a pretty incredible view. 4. Rotorua Redwoods (Whakarewarewa Forest)
The stunning Rotorua Redwoods are a must-visit. Wander or bike through the majestic forest, with trails suitable for all levels. The Redwoods Treewalk, an elevated walkway among the towering trees, offers a unique perspective of this stunning environment. This experience is truly one of the funnest things to do in Rotorua.
5. Kerosene Creek
A hidden gem just outside of Rotorua and provides an incredibly rejuvenating and unique free experience. Hot water from a natural spring under the earth bubbles up into the cool waters of Kerosene Creek, creating the perfect warm bath temperature to bathe in. As with all thermal pools, be sure to not put your head under.
6. Tarawera Falls
Another epic spot just outside of Rotorua are the 65m high Tarawera Falls. These are easily one of the most impressive waterfalls in the whole country and are a must-visit. The walk to the waterfall is just as beautiful as the falls themselves and the river you’ll walk next to has some of the clearest bluest water. You will need a permit to access this spot which can be bought at the local I-site/visitor centre in Kawerau during the weekend.
7. Waimangu Volcanic Valley
Explore the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world’s youngest geothermal system, created by a massive eruption in 1886. Walk through the valley to see features like the Inferno Crater and the stunning Frying Pan Lake, known for its impressive size and geothermal activity. You also have the opportunity to jump on their boat cruise around Lake Rotomahana which takes you to the final resting place of the famous Pink & White Terraces.
8. Te Puia
Te Puia is a cultural and geothermal experience rolled into one. Visit the Whakarewarewa Valley to see the iconic Pohutu Geyser, learn about traditional Maori carving and weaving, and explore the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. Don’t miss the evening hangi feast and cultural performance for a memorable experience.
9. Rotorua Canopy Tours
Experience Rotorua’s forest canopy on a guided zipline tour. The Rotorua Canopy Tours offer an exhilarating way to see the ancient forest from above, with knowledgeable guides sharing insights about the ecosystem and conservation efforts.

11. Hike Mt Tarawera
I know we said 10 of the best, but this one is so good we had to throw it in as an extra. This once-in-a-lifetime experience gives you the opportunity to run into the centre of the Mt Tarawera volcanic crater. The hike begins with an awesome off road 4X4 adventure through native bushland right to the crater's edge as you discover the history of the region. You will then go for a walk before finishing up with a run into the crater. So much fun!
